Hayley Essex

I graduated from the University of Southampton in 2008 with a master’s degree in oceanography, for which I specialised in sedimentology and biology. Since graduating I have worked in Chemistry at the University of Southampton and most recently Geography and Environment. My current role within the Academic Unit is to provide technical support to Staff, Postgraduates and Undergraduate students.

I run the Palaeoecology Laboratories which include the Chemical Preparation Laboratory, Microscopy Laboratory, Scanning Electron Microscope Suite and Analytical Laboratory.

My main research interest is the ichnology of marine sediments, in particular contourite deposits. I am working on a PhD part-time at the IPE at Heriot-Watt University and am a shore based scientist on IODP Expedition 339 (Mediterranean Outflow).
